SMS MCP server: What it is, which tools it gives your AI agents, and how to connect it safely
An SMS MCP server turns a messaging account into a set of tools any AI agent can use. Instead of writing code against an API, the agent quotes, sends and tracks messages from a conversation. This guide explains how it works, using the server included in Ogave Retail as the example.
MCP in one minute
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard published by Anthropic and adopted by the main AI apps. A server describes its tools (name, what it does, its inputs) and the AI app decides when to call them. A remote server works over HTTP, with sign-in through OAuth or an API key.
Tools an SMS MCP server should offer
- quote_price — price, segments and encoding of a message before sending.
- send_sms and send_batch — one message, or one text to a list or many numbers, with a dry run first.
- get_message and list_messages — status, delivery receipt, price and error.
- get_balance, list_sender_ids, list_templates — what the account has available.
- list_contact_lists and add_contacts — manage the audience.
- verify_start and verify_check — one-time codes.
- get_report — volume, delivery rate and cost for a period.
What keeps it safe
- Explicit confirmation before any send or change; batches are dry runs until approved.
- A cap on recipients per request (10,000 by default in Ogave Retail).
- Permissions per connection or API key, allowed IPs and expiry dates.
- A test mode where everything is simulated.
- An activity log of every action, and one-click disconnection.
MCP or plain API?
Both. The API is for software that sends automatically (an online store, a CRM). MCP is for people and agents that work in conversation: a marketer who wants to quote and launch a campaign, a support agent who checks why a message failed, an AI workflow that verifies a user. In Ogave Retail both share the same prices, limits, reports and permissions.

Frequently asked questions
Is MCP only for Claude?
No. It is an open standard used by Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and many other AI clients.
Do I need to write code to use an SMS MCP server?
No. You add the server address in your AI app, sign in and talk to the assistant. Developers can also use it with an API key from scripts.
How is it different from an SMS API?
An API is called by your code; an MCP server is used by an AI agent in conversation. On the same platform they share prices, permissions and reports.
Can I offer an SMS MCP server under my own brand?
Yes. With Ogave Retail each operator or reseller serves the MCP server on its own domain and name.
